The Hottest 5 Rappers Of The Summer 2010

As we are wrapping up the summer, I decided to come up with a list honoring the “Hottest 5 Rappers Of The Summer 2010.” A few of my friends and I packed our Louis Vuitton luggage and spent the weekend in Atlantic City, New Jersey debating which artists should make the list. We set in the pool area of the Harrah Hotel and came up with five rappers that we thought were the hottest and made the biggest impact this summer. All five of the rappers that we chose, had chart-topping hits, released albums or has an album in the works, songs were played heavy in clubs, on radio and had videos that were and still are played on B.E.T and MTV. Each artist buzz was non-stop and they were the most talked about artist in urban music this summer.

1. Rick Ross

Hands down, the Boss was the hottest rapper this summer. On July 20th, he released his fourth studio LP Teflon Don, which debuted at # 2 on the Billboard 200 charts and sold over 176, 300 copies in the first week. Ross first three singles off of the album “Super High”, “BMF” (Blowing Money Fast), and “Live Fast Die Young” all debut on the Billboard Hop 100 chart. To date, Teflon Don has sold over 353,000 copies in the United States.  one word to describe Ross is dope. His lyrics are unbelievable, his flow is sick, his beats are crazy, he’s just “bigger than Hip-Hop in the South.”

2. Drake

His success came over night and it couldn’t happen any quicker. This past June, Drake released his debut album Thank Me Later, which sold over 447,000 copies in the first week. Two months later, his album has reached platinum status. You know you are one of the hottest rappers of the summer 2010, when over 25,000 fans gathered at New York’s South Street Seaport for a free concert, which was cancelled because of a riot. Drake’s album debut at # 1 on the Billboard 200 charts. “Over”, “Find Your Love” and “Miss Me” all debut in the top 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. So far this year Drake has the 2nd highest record sells in 2010 for a Hip-Hop artist. Drake also won Best Male Hip-Hop Artist at the 2010 BET Awards.

3. T.I.

A year in prison couldn’t stop the self-proclaimed King of the South. After being released from the halfway on March 26, 2010, T.I. went straight to the studio to work on his forthcoming album King Uncaged. The album is scheduled to be release this fall. King Uncaged is Tip’s first post prison released. The first two singles from the album “I’m Back” and “Got Your Back” both debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Not only did Tip make a strong comeback in the music industry, he also starred in the movie Takers, which debuted at #1 in box offices. Currently Tip is on tour and putting the final touches on his album.

4. Gucci Mane

Over the last few months, Gooch has improved as an artist. His lyrics, flow and punchlines has gotten better. He is Georgia’s most wanted. After being released from Fulton County Jail on May 12, 2010, Gooch shot six videos in the same week that he was released. On September 28th, Gooch will be dropping his forthcoming LP The Appeal: Georgia’s Most Wanted. Gooch first official single off of his new album “Gucci Time” is currently heating up airwaves. The album features productions and collaborations from Swizz beatz, Nicki Minaj, Wyclef Jean, Ciara and Bun-B.  Before Gooch went to jail, he was hot, and when he came home he was still hot. I think jail helped Gooch buzz. Over the summer, he released a few street records and mixtapes.

5. Fabolous

Loso is the only New York/East Coast rapper to make the list. The Brooklyn emcee went hard on the mixtape circuit this summer. He stayed true to his fans and gave them more reasons to stay true to him by releasing new music throughout the summer and staying afloat. He also toured with Diddy and had the internet going nuts with his Twitter page. Fab also dropped a few videos this summer. Later this year, Fab will be dropping his new album Loso’s Way 2. On August 31st, Fab released his EP There Is No Competition 2: The Grieving Music. The EP is a sequel to Fab’s last mixtape There Is No Competition 2: The Funeral Service.
