Swizz Beatz: He Was Always Destined For Greatness. “The sky is not the limit, it’s just the view.”

Swizz Beatz is more than a music producer. He’s also a fashion designer, creative director and art collector. Born Kasseem Daoud Dean on September 13, 1978 in the Boston Road area of the South Bronx. Just like myself, growing up in the inner city didn’t stop Swizzy from living his dreams. He was always destined for greatness. At the age of 18, Swizzy first witnessed fame and success when produced his first hit-record, “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem” by DMX. Since then, Swizzy produced for some of the most talented artists in the music industry such as Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Mary J. Blige, Whitney Houston, Eve, Jadakiss, 50 Cent and many more.  Swizzy also sold more than 300 million records and has collaborated with major fashion houses like Christian Louboutin, Reebok and Aston Martin. Haute Living magazine caught up Swizzy for an exclusive interview. Swizzy talked about his career, starting out young, his fashion partnerships, his love for art, his brand and much more. Below are a few excerpts:

On the sky is not the limit, it’s just the view.

“When I say the sky is not the limit, it’s just the view, that’s something I came up with because I think people are comfortable when they reach a certain level and lose the hunger,” he said. “I don’t think there should be any boundaries on exploring the next level. If you can stand up on the moon and look up in the air from there, it’s still just a view, you can go up higher than that. I use that slogan to inspire people to do whatever their wildest dreams are, to just go for it.”

On still being relevant after starting out as a DJ in 1998.

“For it to have started in 1998, it’s really a blessing to be in 2011, in the decline of music sales and with all of the changes in the industry as a whole, to be a name that my peers and the fans still call-on.   Swizz said, “looking back from when I was just starting out as a DJ, and then for me to transform into a producer, and to still have the same energy, love, and passion for music after all I’ve accomplished has been really cool.”

To his friends and peers, Swizz’s evolution is an example of what to aspire to.

“Swizz inspires me,” said NBA star Carmello Anthony. “For him to transcend from a ‘business man’ to a business is just incredible. His brand is growing and growing, and it’s only going to continue to grow.”

Swizz’s wife Alicia Keys couldn’t agree more.

“Swizz’s evolution has been epic,” she said. “To come from a place where chances are few and far between to become a man that is unstoppable in everything he puts his mind to, is a true example of the fact that no circumstance can stop us.”

Even fellow entertainment mogul Jay-Z sees Swizz’s varied talents.

“Swizz has grown from a producer to a curator and lover of all the arts,” he said.

Studio Me Dope: Rick Ross & Diddy In The Lab

Rick Ross and Diddy aka Bugatti Boyz were recently spotted in the studio together. Puff Daddy and Teflon Don are in the studio working on a collaborative album, entitled Bugatti Boyz. These two together are our modern-day Puff and Big. In my opinion, “Ross is the Biggie of the South.” Ross is a one of a kind just like the late great Notorious B.I.G. was (God bless the dead).

When You’re Going Drop That Album, What Are You Waiting On? 50 Cent Speaks On New LP

Some people counted 50 Cent out when it comes to Hip-Hop, but in my eyes, he’s still on top and making millions. 50 might haven’t had a song on radio or video on BET in a while, but that didn’t stop his hustle. Over the past year, 50 ranked in millions from movies to headphones to a new energy drink called Street King. The Queens native recently spoke to Complex magazine about his upcoming LP.

“My album’s done. I’ve just got to go through the mixing process. I always have issues with people not moving at the pace that I move at. It’s obvious I work a lot. They don’t work as often as I do, or they’re patient. [Interscope] thinks it’s going to be better if they wait. [They think] I’m going to change my mind and switch to something different in the presentation.

“They didn’t want me to change the album. I don’t want you to take it out of context, the album’s done. What I’m saying to you is they’ll sit there and think taking your time is making it better. And I mean, you do get a chance to evaluate and see what everything else is.

“I’m confident that the music that I have will help sway hip-hop in the right way. I think [hip-hop is going] one way. Where is the aggression in hip-hop? Where is the things that you initially fell in love with? They’re not there.

“Everything cycles. Hip-hop has cycled so far back that it felt like it was something new, but it was a hipster [thing]. A new terminology that would be a hippie. It’s that far back. So when it comes time for it to come full circle, it’ll be time for me.”

Front Page: Kid Cudi Covers Complex’s October/November 2011 Issue

Rapper Kid Cudi is covering the October/November issue of Complex magazine. In the cover story, Cudi talked about being sober, spending time with Kanye West, Wale, his upcoming album and much more. Below are some excerpts:

Our October/November 2011 issue completes Cudi’s Complex hat trick. This year has been filled with change for Cudi—quitting weed, parting ways with some longtime business partners, making up with some old friends, and recording a rock album called The Wizard. Can he keep it all together? Complex Editor-in-chief Noah Callahan-Bever caught up with Cudi to find out where his head is at and where he’s going. The new issue hits stands on October 4, but we’re giving you an early look at the cover story (and extended gallery) now…

Is that drug hangover why you disappeared after you released your second album?
I wanted to clear my head, besides detox. I had to look at the root of the whole problem, and that was work and the business.

As soon as the album was released you disappeared. What did you do?
Hung out with my mom a bit. Went out to L.A., cleared my head. I had a couple shows here and there, but I wasn’t trying to tour.

At the top of the year you seemed to be spending a lot time in New York with Kanye.
I was at another place, another dark place. Me and my girl had broken up. I wasn’t fully healed yet. And being around Kanye and music was my escape. He’s a sober guy, he has a drink every once in a while, but seeing how he throws himself into the studio when he’s stressing about something, I totally admire that. Being around that was therapy for me.
