New Visual: Big Sean Ft. Nicki Minaj “Dance (A**)”

Go stoopid, it’s Hammer time! G.O.O.D. Music recording artist Big Sean just dropped the official visual to his single “Dance (A**)” Ft. Nicki Minaj. In the Mike Carson and Mike Waxx directed visual, Big Sean is sitting on the throne as he celebrates being the new young fresh prince of Hip-Hop and Nicki Minaj is shaking what her mama gave her. In the beginning of the visual, Big Sean pays homage to the opening sequence from “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” (circular camera angles included). The track is off Big Sean’s debut disc Finally Famous: The Album, which debuted in the top 5 on Billboard 200. Big Sean is a great artist. I’m a fan of his music. In my opinion, he’s the most important rapper of our generation. Peep the visual below:

Getting To The Money: Swizz Beatz Talks Business, Branding & Motivation

Prominent music producer and fashion designer Swizz Beatz recently did an exclusive interview with Black Enterprise. In the cover story, the BX native talked about being a regular kid living in New York to becoming a major figure in the entertainment industry, his collaborations and partnerships, how education holds people back, the music industry, 360 deals, and much more. Below are a some excerpts:

With guns — to where you are now: A man of expensive taste and someone who all these brands [Aston Martin, Reebok, Lotus, Audemars-Piguet, Christian Louboutin] want to work with. You’re not only a musician but a visual artist now and in 2011 you’re definitely a business person. Tell me how that evolution happened.

The evolution happened just with me being who I am and thinking outside of the box. My famous quote I came up with is “the sky is not the limit it’s just the view.” I look at it going back to the days when people thought I should just stick to deejaying. Just think about that. If I had just stuck to deejaying I think I would have been one of the best DJs but you would’ve never known me as Swizz Beatz, the producer. That means DMX would’ve never had “Stop Drop” [“Ruff Ryder’s Anthem”], Jay-Z would’ve never had “Jigga …” [“Jigga My N–ga”]. 500 plus songs wouldn’t have been contributed to our culture if I didn’t follow my heart no matter what doors I had to knock down to move forward. The one thing that I do is that I do everything that I love. There’s a lot of opportunities for me to do this and that [and] they’re all big amazing things but if I can’t wake up in the morning feeling great about what I’m doing then I’m doing the wrong thing.  So I just cleared everything off of my table and said I’m only doing what I love doing from this point on. Life is too short.

Do you recall when that was? When’d you have that epiphany?

I been had that mind frame but 2010 is the year I call that my graduation year—mentally, physically, spiritually on the business level, everything. Every couple of years you have to graduate your brand or people or going to still identify me as “Swizz Beatz the Ruff Ryder.” I am a Ruff Ryder and I started Ruff Ryders with my uncles and DMX and everybody but it’s been like 10 years plus since that happened and I don’t want to be stuck in that box— I’m a different person. But people don’t know that, they just know certain highlights of your life that have been publicized and me I’m really a low key person. By the time people heard about me and Aston [Martin] I already done did it. By the time people done heard about me and Christian Louboutin I already did it, it was already on people’s feet! By the time people were hearin’ about me being a VP at Lotus I did it already. By the time people heard of me taking over the global creative direction for Reebok, that’s in play already. That’s how I move. I don’t like to hype things up before they happen. I like to have product done a little bit of success already to go with it, a little bit if excitement to go with it. I do one appearance or announcement and once things are moving then I just go back in the cut.

Front Page: Wale Covering Rolling Out

MMG rapper Wale is in search of a Hip-Hop masterpiece on the latest issue of Rolling Out magazine. In the cover story, the D.C. native talked about the failure of his first album, Rick Ross reaching out to him, his new label, what attracts him to females and much more. Below are some excerpts:

Ambition is the desire to be better than the people who came before you. It’s your obsession to be good or great. How great is your obsession to chase your dream?”–Wale

Before the release of your first album, you built an impressive buzz for yourself. So what caused the album to fail to meet the high expectations?
I put that on myself to get back to where I need to be. We’re working. I do music for my fans and family. My fans appreciated my first album. But my label didn’t ship it for whatever reason. I re-evaluated my life and my situation and now I’m in a different place. I found out a lot of artists can’t go to a city and do a show with 2,000 people. I’m blessed to have people who appreciate what I do.

When did Rick Ross reach out to you?
The Maybach Music Group deal came about when I was a free agent. I look at Rick Ross as more than an artist. I didn’t sign to be a side kick, I want to be an artist and do what I’m capable of doing musically. Ross let’s me do that. He’s the boss at the label, but he’s not bossing me around.

So what is the biggest difference in being at MMG vs. being at Interscope?

The difference is freedom. I’m very in tune with urban culture. I felt my last situation wasn’t allowing me to grow with the urban culture. They saw a Lady Gaga opportunity and I went with it. I was a new artist and I didn’t get it. I thought I was being ignored by black America. It’s not as much money, but to connect with the people I grew up with is more important than connecting with pop fans. Even the white people who are familiar with my music deserve to hear what I’m really saying. I shouldn’t be marketed toward top 40. When I listen to my first album, you can hear who I am talking to. But I now have an opportunity to change that.

Beyond the physical, what is the most attractive thing about a woman?
I like girls who can get the intellect popping. Instead of liking me just because I rap, I like girls who can ask about where I was mentally when I thought of making a certain record. I can find a nice amount of girls who think I’m attractive or whatever, but intellect is very important. “Lotus Flower Bomb” was a record that I wanted to create a long time ago. I’m not sure if radio was ready for that at the time. That’s kind of an adult vibe. I was 23 when I was writing my first project. I was doing what I was told to do instead of doing what my heart told me to do.

Wale’s sophomore album Ambition is now available.
