Teyana Taylor Talks To Complex About How She Met Kanye West, Rihanna & Rita Ora Dressing Like Her & Much More

After being released from Pharrell Williams’s Star Trak label in the beginning of the year, Teyana Taylor is officially G.O.O.D. In the spring, she signed a deal with Kanye West’s label. In April, she released her first EP, entitled The Misunderstanding of Teyana Taylor. The disc received mixed reviews from music critics. She is now gearing up for the release of G.O.O.D. Music’s Cruel Summer compilation album which arrives September 4. On August 6, Teyana will hit the studio to start working on her debut solo album. In an interview with Complex, Teyana talked about meeting Kanye West for the first time, being the only female signed to G.O.O.D. Music, Cruel Summer, being released from Star Trak, fashion and much more. Below are some excerpts:

How did you first meet Kanye West?

At his Glow in the Dark tour with him, N.E.R.D. and Rihanna. At the time I was signed to Pharrell Williams and his Star Trak label. Kanye used to always like my outfits. So from jump we became fashion friends and we’d talk about different clothes and designing different things. We’d email each other different garments that we liked. That’s how we became friends and super close.

What’s it like to be the only G.O.O.D. girl?
It feels great, knowing that I’m the first and only girl. It just makes me think about everybody who doubted. To have the opportunity to be a part of something so iconic is amazing.

What are you doing on the Cruel Summer album?
I rapped on certain songs. I sing on certain songs. But like everyone else in the group, I really don’t know what’s making the album. But it’s definitely going to be some hot shit. Different shit. Not that shit that everybody expects.

You dropped your mixtape in the spring. Can we expect more of the hip-hop soul type of sound from you?
My mixtape, The Misunderstanding Of Teyana Taylor, gives people a very ‘90s vibe. I’m pretty consistent with my music. Kanye loves that. He’s always like, “Every time she gets on a track, she’s on some Mary shit.” I just appreciate the way R&B used to be. I’m trapped in it. I’m staying consistent with it.

Out & About: Don Bleek Spotted At Hot 97’s ‘Night Out’

Skip and Don Bleek (in the picture above).

This past Tuesday (July 31), I attended New York’s Hot 97 ‘Night Out’ at the Beekman Beer Garden Club in Manhattan (at the South Street Seaport). The invite only event was sponsored by Ciroc. DJ Mister Cee, DJ Enuff and DJ Camillo were on the 1’2 and 2’s. I had a great time with my college friend Skip who came to NYC from North Carolina. We danced, ate some good food and had a drink or two. Celebrity blogger Miss Info, Def Jam’s Sean Pecas, and radio personality K. Foxx were also in attendance. Peep the pics below:

New Visual: Teyana Taylor “Make Your Move” Ft. Wale

With a 1930’s Jazz musical nightclub style mixed with a 1990’s Hip-Hop theme, Teyana Taylor’s “Make Your Move” Ft. Wale official visual went viral. In the beginning of the visual, Teyana and her girls are dressed 90’s style as they walked on 125th Street in Harlem and bumped into another group of females which erupted into a fight. After the fight was over with, Teyana and her girls walked off the street into a nightclub and dance on the stage in 1930’s inspired outfits. She also pays homage to the greatest entertainment in the world (Michael Jackson). She danced in a white suit and suspenders. Bad Boy rapper French Montana made a cameo in the visual. The track is featured on Teyana’s latest EP, The Misunderstanding of Teyana Taylor. Watch below:

Miami Takeover 2012 Part II: The Black Alley Band Interview

Most of us who are human love great music, well during the MTO 2012 weekend I witnessed a band who is putting The Soul Garage Movement on the map.  Black Alley is a band born and bred in DC and has been rocking out together for five years. The YDBR team was privileged to interview two members of the group Kacey, who is the gorgeous lead vocalist and the only female in the band and their drummer, Animal.  We asked Kacey and Animal what exactly is The Soul Garage Movement and they both excitedly explained that the music is: Mystery, Rock, Neo-Soul, Hip-Hop and Go Go among other things.  Animal event sweetened the deal by saying it can be classified as tropical flavored kool-aid, a mix of everything.

Kacey and Animal both profess that being and staying in the entertainment business requires one to be true to themselves, be original and in the words of Frankie Beverly, “Don’t fall for the flavor of the week”.  Being successful requires lots of hard work and this band is definitely dedicated to the work and it was evident by their slew of fans rocking to every bit of everything that they performed at the Miami Convention Center. One thing is for sure and two things for certain, they will make you MOVE and not want to stop.

Black Alley’s current CD is Soul Swagger Rock Sneakers and the band did an excellent job of performing their hits which many of the songs were familiar to us.  My critique of the band is simple, listening to the album is Soul Swagger and seeing Black Alley perform live is Rock Sneakers! They just put the exclamation point on everything and make you want to hit the repeat button for everything they produce. This album is a must have and you can find out more information on Black Alley by visiting their website http://www.blackalleyband.com/  heir Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/blackalley and follow them on twitter @WeAreBlackAlley
