Fabolous Speaks On His New LP, ‘Loso’s Way 2′, Reality TV, Current State of NY Hip-Hop, Congrats A$AP Rocky & More

Last week, Def Jam rapper Fabolous released his new track, “Ready” Ft. Chris Brown which is the lead single off his forthcoming LP, Loso’s Way 2: Rise To Power. The album is scheduled to arrive later this year. Billboard’s The Juice caught up with the Brooklyn rapper, and Loso discussed the current state of NY Hip-Hop, his new album and said that he is 80-85% done with it, named some of the collaborations on the project and congrats A$AP Rocky. Before Loso ended his interview, he shared his not so good feelings about reality TV. Below are some highlights:

Before “Ready,” you released your “So N.Y.” anthem. There’s been a lot of talk about New York hip-hop and artists, both new and OGs, that have kept the city alive. What are your thoughts about the current state of N.Y. hip-hop and how you fit in it?
I think it’s always going to be a place for it. Of course, it’s not as prominent as it was in the past but that’s the change in music. Whether you’re from the South, West, East, or wherever, a lot of the music is sounding the same. Different artists rap over different beats but a lot of the artists are sounding the same. I think that’s where New York lost its leverage.

I think there’s always going to be artists that continue to put their stamp on the game, though. Congrats to A$AP Rocky. I think it’s great how he created a lane for himself. It may not sound like the typical 90s-2000s N.Y. music, but he’s still from here. He made N.Y. fit his style of music. There’s a change in the generation between the old and what’s going on now. You can’t make music for what people want N.Y. to be. You’ve got to make what you want. I think between him, French Montana and others, you’re going to hear different kinds of music coming from N.Y. It shows the diversity.

How far along are you “Loso’s Way 2?”
I’d say it’s 80-85% done. I’d even give some of that 15% to working daily until I’ve got to turn it in. You may come with a record that’s urgent, that has to be on that project, the day before you turn in.

What are some of the songs or collaborations you’re excited about?
I’ve worked with a lot of guys. I’m not even sure which songs are going to make it or not yet. But I’ve worked with Chris Brown, of course. I got Rick Ross, John Legend, Future, Ne-Yo, Trey Songz, Young Jeezy, Chrisette Michelle. I’m just thinking of names off the top. I’m still working on piecing it together and making it sonically fit. I even got a text today and was speaking to Nas about doing something as well.

Wow. Talk about New York hip-hop. That would be crazy for the city.
Definitely. We haven’t worked together yet so I’d love to make that happen. We’re gonna pull it together.

You spoke about a record you having coming out about VH1’s “Love & Hip-Hop” show..
It’s not just about the show. It’s more about my situation and my views on reality TV. I just used that name because that show has been associated with my situation.

I think in hip-hop, reality TV has become just as important of a promotional tool as the radio. Something that once was thought of as gimmicky, is becoming more mainstream and accepted amongst artists.
I still think it’s gimmicky. You using a gimmick to sell what you’re trying to sell. In certain places, people are exposing or exploiting a lot of stuff. To each his own, but it’s not my cup of tea. I don’t choose to entertain with my personal life. I’d rather entertain with my music. I’m cool with my personal life being personal. Certain people don’t feel that way. They feel they can control it and show what they want to show. It’s not what I’m about. I can’t say I’d never do it because if I could control it and it was done the right way it could possibly happen. But as far as making a “For The Love of Loso,” nah.

Rihanna Is Shining Like A Diamond In A Fur Vest & Timberland Boots In NYC

Stylish pop star and fashion trendsetter Rihanna is back in NYC. Earlier today, she took a flight from LAX to JFK and her outfit was an eye catcher. She had heads turning when she walked through the airport in a fur vest layered over a denim jacket and J Brand Aiden Boyfriend Jeans paired with Timberland boots. The “Diamonds” singer accessorized her outfit with a dark pair of sunglasses. Before leaving L.A., Riri had a business meeting with her mentor Jay-Z. Is her outfit an eye catcher or what?

Is He The Next KING Of NY? French Montana Releases ‘Excuse My French’ Cover

Bad Boy/Interscope rapper French Montana came a long way from Morocco, now he is one of the hottest New York rappers out at the current moment. Is he the next king of New York? Earlier today, the cover art for Montana’s long-delayed debut album, Excuse My French was released. The journey began years ago in the Bronx’s rough Mott Haven neighborhood, after Montana and his family migrated to the states from Africa. The final detestation arrives on April 16th and on the cover art, Montana reminds us where it all started at as he walks through the Moroccan desert. Montana told Rolling Stone the importance of his Moroccan heritage.

“The concept of the cover is to represent my journey from Morocco to New York, from a kid to a hustler, from the beginning to today,” French says. “The deserts represent the dry period of my life when I had nothing and I had to work to get that water and to make a living for me and my family. It was only right that I used my son for that picture. He represents my future and me; I represent his past. It is all about the journey of my life, my music, and my movement.”

DMX’s Ex-Wife Tashera Simmons Talks To Don Bleek About How The Rapper Lost His Soul But Gained The World, His Drug Issues & Her New Book

Last week, I sat down with multi-platinum rapper DMX’s ex-wife, Tashera Simmons at the Inc Lounge at The Time Hotel for the NYC premiere screening of the upcoming reality show, Starters Wives Confidential which is set to premiere tonight Tuesday (January 29th) on TLC. Tashera is striving to get her life and finances on track while divorcing her childhood sweetheart, DMX. They have four children together. During our interview, Tashera talked about how the rapper lost his soul but gained the world, the people around him were basically “yes men” and didn’t help him, going from regular broke people in Yonkers, New York to flying around the world, her new book, Finding Tashera and much more.

Let’s take it back to the very beginning when you first started dating DMX. What was it like and what kind of person was he?

DMX was 18 when I started dating him. He was totally a different person; he was very caring, passionate, he was my biggest inspiration. His drive was crazy! I was with him 10 years before he even got into this game and I saw him lose his soul but gained the world at the same time when he was at his height. It was very scary to see and I prayed everyday that it wouldn’t take total control of him but it did.

Do you think the people who were around DMX are part of the reason for his downfalls and did they ever try to help him?

The people around him didn’t help, his drug habits didn’t help, it added to it. It was people in his face yessing him, yessing him, yessing him and the people have a lot to do with his changed and what took place in his life and he is so talented.

He is very talented! I am a fan of DMX; I remember when I first saw him live in concert with Jay-Z and Ja Rule in Philly, when I was a kid. This was probably in 2004, during Jay-Z’s, ‘Jay-Z and Friends Tour’.

Who isn’t a fan of DMX? I am a fan too! [Laugh], but I know who he is. I’ve been around so many celebrities but I never saw someone go in the studio and make something in 15 minutes. DMX is super talented and I am still rooting for him but it is not my job to take care of him anymore. I am finally free! It’s a feeling that all women wants.

I definitely hear you on that one because my mother dated my step pops for 14 years and when she had enough she just gave up and she was so happy to be free and have her freedom back.

So you can relate and we don’t want to bash them or anything, it’s just we’re happy to be free again.

I also read his book, E.A.R.L.: The Autobiography of DMX and he mentioned that you and he were childhood sweethearts, how you were there for him when y’all didn’t have nothing, then one day you guys are filthy rich; living in a mansion, driving nice cars and flying around the world. How did you make the transition from having nothing to the wealthy life because you guys were just regular people from Yonkers, New York?

It happened so fast! One day we were poor and the next day we were rich. It happened so fast that I don’t even think DMX knew how big he was. It was amazing! It was a feeling that I can’t even express in words. We went from not knowing where we were going to get the money from to pay the next bill to having a whole lot of money. We were like, “holy shit!” It was unbelievable! We first realized it, when we went into a store in the mall, because we were just like regular people from Yonkers , but they had to close the store down because people were mobbing and they had to sneak us out through the back door to exit. We just couldn’t believe it! In this industry nowadays, you have to be so strong. I also have to add that I truly love DMX and I never try to throw him under the bus because he’s a good person, he just made bad decisions.

Speaking of DMX being a good person, how did you feel when you heard him making positive songs about you?

I feel like DMX showed a lot of his love toward me in his songs. He put my name in songs, made me feel very important, and put me on a pedestal but sometimes I think “was he doing that because of the things he was doing behind my back.” He was trying to show me how much he loved me but at the same time, he was doing all this other dirt. It made me feel real portrayed like he portrayed me because I feel like I was living a lie. One day he’s talking about me to the world and then he’s doing stuff behind my back. It made me feel good but bad at the same time.

I heard that you have a book coming out. What is the name of it and when will it be out?

It’s called; Finding Tashera and it will be out the end of February.

After we ended our interview, Tashera asked me to stand up, gave me a hug and told me to tell my mother to stay strong, and she wished me the best in my future endeavors. This was by far one of my best interviews. Tashera is a sweetheart. Much success!

A$AP Ferg Set To Release ‘Trap Lord’ Mixtape

After signing a lucrative deal with Polo Grounds/RCA Records earlier this month, Harlem’s own A$AP Ferg has no plans of slowing down. A$AP Rocky’s band mate proves that he is next up! Ferg is set to drop his, Trap God mixtape in late February/early March. Ferg recently told XXL magazine, “My plan is to drop this Trap Lord mixtape, shake the world up a little bit, turn the world upside down. And just have fun. It’s about having fun.”

When Ferg was asked about a release date for his upcoming project, he said, “I’m looking at the end of February, early March. This is my first demo I’m ever putting out. I never even put out a demo for the labels to hear. This is the first shit I’m even putting together with numbers, with songs. So I wanna make sure it’s something special, I’m giving it my all. That’s why it’s kind of taking long. But trust me, when it comes out, it’s gonna be well worth it.”
