A$AP Ferg Talks About Being Unique In Fashion, Not Being Accepted In Harlem & Being Called Gay

complexaapferg2

If you are a fan of A$AP Rocky, then you definitely know/heard of his A$AP Mob comrade, A$AP Ferg. The Harlem rapper is featured in Complex’s June/July 2013 issue. Inside, the “Work” rapper talks about being unique in fashion, people not seeing the group’s vision in the beginning of A$AP Mob’s development, not being accepted in Harlem and being called gay.

Personally, I am tired of people being called “gay” and not being accepted in their communities because of the way they dress. Just because you grew up in the projects or inner city does not mean that you have to dress urban or live by society’s norms in the Black community. I grew up in the projects in Camden, NJ, and I always get criticize, called “gay” and “arrogant” because I graduated from the prestigious Rutgers University, speak proper and dress different. However, it does not bother me because it is not true and others people opinion(s) does not define who I am. Read A$AP Ferg’s excerpts below:

On people not seeing or believing A$AP Mob’s vision during the early stage of their career:
When people left or got booted out of A$AP Mob, it was because they didn’t see the vision and believe. They weren’t for the team. When Rocky got that $3 million deal, it combed out the bullshit and left the real n****s. Those of us who stayed are prospering. If I was dumb, I could’ve left, like, “I need to go and get my $3 million.” It’s a chain effect. Rocky goes first, whoever goes second is stepping up to the plate, and so on. You’ve got to play your position.

On fashion, not being accepted in Harlem and people calling them gay:
A$AP is comfortable being black sheep. We were always weirdos. We wanted to be unique. People didn’t accept us in Harlem. They were scared to stand next to Jeremy Scott. Why? Because he’s gay? He’s one of the best designers of our generation. When Rocky wore the Ann Demeulemeester shirt on BET, people called it a dress. It’s some high fashion shit, a $30,000 long-sleeve shirt. We’re on that different type of fly. People who call us gay just aren’t open-minded. “

A big congratulations goes out to Harlem’s up & coming rapper and A$AP Rocky’s bandmate A$AP Ferg. He just signed a solo deal with Polo Grounds Music/RCA Records, which is also the same label that A$AP Rocky is signed too. Ferg gained a buzz off the success of his single “Work” which gathered over 1.4 million views on YouTube. Polo Grounds confirmed the signing in a new press release.

I’m just proud right now because this is everything we wished and hoped for,” commented Rocky on Ferg’s signing. “A$AP Ferg worked hard for this and I put all my faith and backing into him. I feel like ‘Work’ is our generation’s “Sippin On Some Syrup” [Three 6 Mafia feat. UGK] or “Chickenhead” [Project Pat feat. La Chat & Three 6 Mafia], it has that feeling.”

asapmob3

Pyrex Vision is becoming a popular trend in the fashion and Hip-Hop communities. I was first introduced to this brand back in May when rapper and fashion designer Kanye West was spotted wearing some pieces from the collection. DONDA’s Creative Director, RSVP Co-Owner and Kanye West’s longtime personal Art Director Virgil Abloh is the creator and owner of Pyrex Vision. Abloh is known for his dope style and is the man behind mixing luxury fashion (Givenchy, Alexander Wang & Chanel) with urban streetwear . Members of Harlem’s A$AP Mob were chosen to model in some pieces from the collection. Check out A$AP Barri, A$AP Nast, A$AP Josh & A$AP Illz in the photo shoot and video below. Be sure to visit RSVP to buy some pieces from the Pyrex Vision collection.

Harlem, USA Feels Like The 90’s Again! DOWNLOAD A$AP Mob ‘Lords Never Worry’ Mixtape

The wait is over! Harlem’s rap crew A$AP Mob just dropped their new mixtape, Lords Never Worry. The 17-tracks disc has collaborations with Danny Brown, Raekwon, Gunplay, Jim Jones, Flatbush Zombies, Fat Trel and others. I like the mixtape cover a lot because they are wearing baseball jerseys and it reminds me of Diddy & Bad Boys and Cam’ron & Dipset in the early 90’s.

New Interview: A$AP Rocky Talks About The Culture In Harlem, His Brother Being Murdered, A$AP Mob Being Compared To Wu Tang & More

The Guardian UK recently traveled to Harlem, New York from across the pond to visit Rapper A$AP Rocky. While walking through Harlem World (123rd Street), Rocky and the UK publication touched on various topics including living in and the culture in Harlem, A$AP Mob, his father being arrested, oldest brother being murdered, respecting women and his crew being compared to the Wu Tang Clan. Below are some excerpts:

On Living in Harlem and the culture:

Well, you know, living in Harlem we’re grungy,” says Rocky when asked about his home turf. “Harlem has always had its culture; you think of the Harlem renaissance and the 90’s when hardcore hip-hop hit, but then you got the 70s when there was a lot of pimping, then the 80’s when crack hit. We have a rebel mindstate in Harlem. To be rebellious is not that easy these days because of all the penalties and consequences. But we’ve dealt with consequences and penalties since day one.

On him and his crew lyrical flow, style and southern sound:

“We’re a collective of all the music genres,” says Rocky with typical confidence. “John Lennon is the fucking coolest dude on the planet and I don’t care what nobody says. It’s not just rap. But we grew up in this shit. We are who we are today because we listen to people from the south and the west, as well as New York. This is how our generation raps now.”

On his father relocating his family to Pennsylvania in the late 90’s and succeeded in getting rich off drugs, until he was arrested:

When he fell off, that’s when it got difficult,” says Rocky. “It just quickly switched to the worst predicament.”

On his oldest brother being murdered:

He was killed just about three blocks down,” says Rocky. We’re on Frederick Douglass Boulevard and 114th Street, and he is visibly shaken. “Exactly three blocks down. He was murdered. He was extorting this guy and the guy had enough of his shit. One day he tried to mess with the dude again and the guy literally shot him through his pocket. He just died there. No one came through.

On using the word b***h and respecting women:

“I just think it’s not necessary to disrespect women,” he says. “Of course we use the word ‘bitch’ but that’s just how we were raised. Where I’m from I use both ‘n***a’ and ‘bitch’. But I call my white friends ‘n***a’. I have white members in A$AP. We’re all family.”

On A$AP Mob being compared to Wu Tang Clan:

Everybody compares us to the Wu-Tang Clan. That’s an honor, don’t you think?” says Rocky, flashing that smile again. “Our plan is to stay productive, create a legacy and have longevity. Because America is changing. I can promise you that in the next five years people are going to get their priorities straight and their lives are going to be fun. I’m gonna make sure everyone stays young. I mean, look at us. We’re kids and this shit is just Harlem.”
