Front Page: Wale Covering Rolling Out

MMG rapper Wale is in search of a Hip-Hop masterpiece on the latest issue of Rolling Out magazine. In the cover story, the D.C. native talked about the failure of his first album, Rick Ross reaching out to him, his new label, what attracts him to females and much more. Below are some excerpts:

Ambition is the desire to be better than the people who came before you. It’s your obsession to be good or great. How great is your obsession to chase your dream?”–Wale

Before the release of your first album, you built an impressive buzz for yourself. So what caused the album to fail to meet the high expectations?
I put that on myself to get back to where I need to be. We’re working. I do music for my fans and family. My fans appreciated my first album. But my label didn’t ship it for whatever reason. I re-evaluated my life and my situation and now I’m in a different place. I found out a lot of artists can’t go to a city and do a show with 2,000 people. I’m blessed to have people who appreciate what I do.

When did Rick Ross reach out to you?
The Maybach Music Group deal came about when I was a free agent. I look at Rick Ross as more than an artist. I didn’t sign to be a side kick, I want to be an artist and do what I’m capable of doing musically. Ross let’s me do that. He’s the boss at the label, but he’s not bossing me around.

So what is the biggest difference in being at MMG vs. being at Interscope?

The difference is freedom. I’m very in tune with urban culture. I felt my last situation wasn’t allowing me to grow with the urban culture. They saw a Lady Gaga opportunity and I went with it. I was a new artist and I didn’t get it. I thought I was being ignored by black America. It’s not as much money, but to connect with the people I grew up with is more important than connecting with pop fans. Even the white people who are familiar with my music deserve to hear what I’m really saying. I shouldn’t be marketed toward top 40. When I listen to my first album, you can hear who I am talking to. But I now have an opportunity to change that.

Beyond the physical, what is the most attractive thing about a woman?
I like girls who can get the intellect popping. Instead of liking me just because I rap, I like girls who can ask about where I was mentally when I thought of making a certain record. I can find a nice amount of girls who think I’m attractive or whatever, but intellect is very important. “Lotus Flower Bomb” was a record that I wanted to create a long time ago. I’m not sure if radio was ready for that at the time. That’s kind of an adult vibe. I was 23 when I was writing my first project. I was doing what I was told to do instead of doing what my heart told me to do.

Wale’s sophomore album Ambition is now available.

Ambition: Wale Album Artwork

On 11.1.11, Maybach Music Group rapper Wale will be releasing his sophomore album, entitled Ambition. This is the follow-up to his 2009’s debut album Attention Deficit. The disc debuted at #21 on the Billboard 200 and sold 28,000 copies in its first week. Last month, Wale took to his official Twitter account @Wale and announced that Ambition was finished. On September 29, 2011, New York’s  DJ Funk Master Flex debuted Wale’s latest track “Tats On My Arms” Ft. Rick Ross. On the album cover, instead of doing an expensive photo shoot, Wale opts for an illustration of himself. In my opinion, “the cover is dope.”

In an interview with XXLMag.com, Wale compared Ambiton to Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt album.

I’m just trying to make a classic album, something that you can put up there with Reasonable Doubt and all the stuff that’s blasphemous to compare your work to now,” Wale explained. “Why can’t I say my album is just as good as Reasonable Doubt or I’m trying to beat Reasonable Doubt? That shit is blasphemous to say.”

They just think that’s ’cause people are too lazy,” he continued. “Young niggas won’t let themselves be great and old niggas won’t let young niggas be great. Jay-Z’s my personal friend. Jay-Z’s a nigga that I idolized when I was younger. Why the fuck you telling I can’t try to beat his album?”

Wale Compares His New LP ‘Ambition’ To ‘Reasonable Doubt’: “Why Can’t I Say My album is Just as Good as Reasonable Doubt”

Maybach Music Group rapper Wale will be dropping his sophomore album, Ambition November 1. Last week, I reported that Wale and Kid Cudi are rebuilding their friendship and Cudi will appear on Wale’s new album, on a track, titled “Focused.”

In a recent interview with XXLMag.com, Wale spoke on his upcoming disc and compared it to Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt album. Below are some excerpts:

On creating a critically acclaimed album and having songs on the radio.

None of us have been able to create a critically-acclaimed album so to speak,” Wale tells XXL. “That was my goal to try to do that. I ain’t really into selling because I’m doing pretty good. I got records on the radio for the first time in my career.”

On making a classic and Wale compares his album to Reasonable Doubt.

Focused: Wale & Kid Cudi Rebuilding Their Friendship And Working On A Collabo

Maybach Music Group rapper Wale will be dropping his sophomore album, Ambition November 1. One of the biggest features on the album is a song, titled “Focused,” which features Kid Cudi. The two are working on rebuilding their friendship.

According to MTV News, while previewing his album for select media outlets, Wale dropped hints about the collaborator — a friend of his that lived in Brooklyn while he was living in SoHo — on the song he was about to play last.

We’re 23 years old at this time, we’re trying to figure it all out,” Wale told MTV News. “We went from not having sh– to having money at our disposal, so it kind of f—ed up our friendship. He doesn’t smoke as much anymore, but his name is Scott.”

Scott is Kid Cudi first name. The two were once good friends and worked together in the past on Cudi debut album  Man on the Moon: The End of Day. Wale appeared on Cudi’s track  “Is There Any Love.” A few months later, the two had a falling-out; because of their lack of communication.

Sneaker Me Dope: Wale Rocking “CTK” Nike Air Max LeBron 7

Maybach Music Group rapper Wale was spotted at the Heineken Red Star event in Philly; rocking a pair of “CTK” Nike Air max LeBron 7. This sneaker has a maroon, gold, and white colorway. The base of the upper is in all white and really stands out against the maroon colored upper half. Gold highlights the design really well throughout the Flywire on the midpanel, and the on the laces. This shoe also sports “Christ the King” on the medial Flywire panel near the heel. They are available now at House of Hoops.

On November 1, Wale will be releasing his sophomore album Ambition. The first single off the project is “Bad Girls Club,” and it was released digitally on July 19, 2011.
