Kanye West Appears On New York’s Hot 97 With Angie Martinez; Explains His Partnership With adidas

Music artist, fashion designer and creative director Kanye West has finally found corporate backing that he’s been looking for. A few minutes ago, the “Bound 2” rapper appeared on New York’s Hot 97 with Angie Martinez and confirmed that he has, indeed, signed a deal with adidas.

Kanye left Nike for adidas because the sportswear giant actually offered him more creative control. Nike refused to pay Kanye royalties because he’s not a professional athlete.

So then I start turning up in the BBC interview, so [Nike] said, ok cool, we’re gonna give you a bigger sandbox to play in. We’re gonna give you this amount right here to design, and two collections a year, and 30 skews — that’s the amount of items that you have. Would that make you happy, Kanye? And I said, well I need royalties. It’s not even like I have a joint venture. At least give me some royalties. Michael Jordan has 5%, that business is $2 billion. He makes a $100 million dollars a year off of 5% royalties. Nike told me we can’t give you royalties because you’re not a professional athlete. I told them, I go to the Garden and play one-on-NO-ONE. I’m a performance athlete. Did I really ANYTHING? YES! Did I really EVERYTHING. 100,000 percent. I’m 100,000 percent at all times. It’s people that work in offices trying to tell me how to think, when I got a better perspective. I live in Paris“.

So the old me, without a daughter, would have taken the Nike deal because I just love Nikes so much. But the new me, with a daughter, takes the adidas deal because I have royalties and I have to provide for my family“.

Angie: “So that’s official, did you officially announce the adidas deal?

Kanye: “Whatever’s official, non-official, official, what y’all gonna see is… I am going to be the Tupac of product… I’ma be the first hip-hop designer, and because of that… I’ma be bigger than Walmart“.

Do you think this was a good move on Kanye’s behave? Do you think he can recreate the hype with adidas that he created with Nike?

Hot 97’s Summer Jam 2013 Recap & Performances By Kendrick Lamar, Lil Kim, Fab, Nicki Minaj, French Montana & More

New York’s Hot 97′s Summer Jam 2013 returned this year for their 20th anniversary at New Jersey’s Met Life Stadium and yours truly (Don Bleek) was in the press booth reporting/blogging live. Artists including Joe Budden, Miguel, Wale, Chris Brown, Fabolous, Wu-Tang Clan, 2 Chainz, A$AP Rocky, Kendrick Lamar and this year’s headliner French Montana all performed on the main stage. Tons of surprise guests such as Lil Kim, Meek Mill, Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Sean Kingston and more also performed at last night’s event.

Celebrating Hot 97′s Summer Jam 20th anniversary, the main event started at 6:30 p.m. with Dirty Jerz rapper Joe Budden. He took the stage in a denim shirt and camo pants paired with Timberland boots. Budden performed tracks including “Pump It Up,” “She Don’t Put It Dow” Ft. Tank who was one of his special guests. Budden also brought out his Slaughterhouse comrade, Joell Ortiz during his set.

After Budden exited the stage, Miguel sexed it up for the ladies. He performed his chart-topping and Grammy Award winning single “Adore” and other tracks off his latest album, Kaleidoscope Dream. Miguel brought out Roc Nation’s rapper J. Cole for “Power Trip,” which will appear on J. Cole’s upcoming album, Born Sinner. The album arrives June 18. Before ending his segment, Miguel pulled out Mariah Carey for “Beautiful“.

D.C.’s Wale was next up to the plate. He opened his set with “Lotus Flower Bomb,” followed by “Lightout” and “Bad“. Wale also brought out his MMG partner Meek Mill who performed “Imma Boss,”House Party” and “It’s Levels To This S**t”.

Chris Brown followed with an amazing performance. He kicked off his segment with “Beautiful People“. Brown was one of my favorite performers of the night. His choreography and singing was on point.  He added some Caribbean flavor to his set by bringing out Sean Kingston for “Beat It“. Brown closed out his set with “Ready,” bringing out Fabolous.

After performing “Ready” with Chris Brown, Fab continued his set by performing “Body Ya,” “Killin Em,” and “Life Is So Exciting,” bringing out Pusha T who also performed his verse to “I Don’t Like“. Fab showed hometown pride by bringing out Lil Kim. She performed “Queen B***h” off her debut album, Hard CoreLil Kim’s long-time rival Foxy Brown was also backstage and it is rumored that she was supposed to join Fab on stage; however his set was cut short. It is also being reported that something went wrong with Foxy’s earpiece. Fab also brought out Meek Mill for their Dreamchasers collabo, “Racked Up Shorty.”

Legendary Hip-Hop duo Wu Tang Clan held it down for all the real Hip-Hop fans. They performed a lot of their 90’s era tracks. The Wu woke up the new school and gave us a classic lesson on real Hip-Hop.

2 Chainz brought his Atlanta style to NJ/NY by performing cuts from his debut Based On A Tru Story. He surprised the crowd by bringing out YMCMB’s femcee Nicki Minaj for “I Love Dem Strippers” and “Beez In The Trap“. Before leaving the stage, 2 Chainz premiered his new single, “Feds Watching“.

A$AP Rocky and his Harlem A$AP Mob invaded Summer Jam. Rocky took the stage and performed various cuts from his Long.Live.A$AP debut album. He brought out old skool rap duo, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony’s Layzie Bone, Bizzy Bone and Wishbone for “Thuggish Ruggish Bone.” A$AP Ferg also performed his “Work (Remix)” with Trinidad James and ScHoolboy Q.

NY/NJ showed West coast rapper Kendrick Lamar a lot of love last night at Met Life. K. Dot along with his Black Hippy crew held it down. K. Dot still commanded the stage in the pouring rain. He ran through cuts off his debut, good kid, m.A.A.D city. He called on Jay Rock, Ab-Soul and ScHoolboy Q during his almost 30-minutes set. Jay-Z was backstage with Beyoncé and it is rumored that he was supposed to come out with either Kendrick or Fabolous, but I don’t really know what happened.

This year’s headliner, French Montana closed out the show. Unfortunately, his set was cut short, very short, it only lasted nine-minutes. According to Hot 97’s PD, Ebro, the heavy rain cut French’s set. However he did managed to perform a medley of his club bangers before being joined by Rick Ross and Lil Wayne for “Pop That.” As soon as he got into, “Ain’t Worried Bout Nothing,” his set was cut.

Special thanks to Hot 97 and Emmis Media for the press passes. I really enjoy this year’s show and I am looking forward to the next one. Until 2014, God Bless and have a great/safe summer.

Nicki Minaj Appears On Hot 97; Ends ‘Summer Jam’ Beef With Peter Rosenberg

Earlier today Tuesday (May 28), YMCMB’s femcee Nicki Minaj appeared on New York’s Hot 97, where she ended her ‘Summer Jam‘ beef with Peter Rosenberg. Almost one year ago, the on-air host said, “We about that real Hip-Hop, not ‘Starship,'” referring to Minaj’s pop single. Minaj took offense to Rosenberg’s comment and at the last minute, she decided to cancel her performance at last year’s ‘Summer Jam‘ concert.

In the sit down interview, Rosenberg explained his side of the story, and Minaj said that she’s over it, “It’s cool. It’s water under the bridge. It’s so long ago I can’t even act like I care.”

Don Bleek’s Exclusive: K. Foxx Calls Angela Yee An Insecure ‘Dry Statue’!!!

Angela Yee (left) and K. Foxx (right)

The on-screen tension between Hot 97′s own K. FOXX and Power 105.1′s ANGELA YEE on VH1′s newest reality series, The Gossip Game is undeniable. The two radio personalities have been battling since the series premiered, and there doesn’t appear to be an end to their brewing differences in sight. Recently, I interviewed K. FOXX for Juicy magazine to get her stance on a number of things including rise from humble beginnings, how she managed to work her way through the male dominated radio industry and issues with her on-screen nemesis, ANGELA YEE.

Juicy: After doing radio in Miami for years, what brought you back to NYC?

KF: It’s not like I had to go seeking for it. It kind of came to me. Ebro called me up and said, ‘we have an opportunity for you to be on air for a week and then we will make a decision.’  I was like, ‘okay.’  It came to me at a time when I was really seeking something more in my career, and then I got the phone call.

Juicy:  Angela Yee has said numerous times that the difference between you and her, what may be the reason for tension, is that she is an equal with the male co-hosts on her morning show, and claims you are not. How did you feel about those comments?

KF: I think she’s just trying to throw jabs at me. Me, Ciph and Rosenberg all add something to the show. I am the female on the show, I come out with different ideas. [Ciph and Rosenberg]  come up with comedy skits and other things.  [Angela’s] show [Power 105’s ‘Breakfast Club’] is drier – it’s watered down. We’re more creative. We come up with skits, and we’re intellectual as well. As far as what she says,  I think that’s all her insecurities showing.

Juicy: So then what is the biggest difference between you and Angela Yee?

KF: I am colorful, she’s black and white. I live my life in color. I dream in color, that’s actually the name of my organization for kids. There are so many colors in my life that make me who I am. You can tell by the way that I talk, dress, and how I carry myself. When you look at her, it’s like a statue, a very dry statue.

Juicy: Do you think Angela’s jealous of you and all your ‘color’?

KF: I have no idea.

Juicy: Are these the type of situations that make it harder being a female in the radio industry?

KF: I think that it is hard being in the radio industry period! But when you are a female, you have to work extra hard not only because it’s a boys club, but people are always going to test you. It’s more challenging, but I think I do a pretty good job at maneuvering past those things.

Juicy: What else can viewers expect from you this season on ”The Gossip Game”?

KF: I don’t want to come across as “the angry Black woman” that’s always defending myself. You’re going to learn more about K. Foxx separate from the radio. You’re going to know what my challenges are besides what I do on the radio. You’re going to see my everyday life, my everyday activities. I think it’s good for people to see different sides of me.

Be sure to catch K. FOXX on VH1′s The Gossip Game Monday’s at 9pm.

This interview is also posted on Juicy’s site here!

Skip and Don Bleek (in the picture above).

This past Tuesday (July 31), I attended New York’s Hot 97 ‘Night Out’ at the Beekman Beer Garden Club in Manhattan (at the South Street Seaport). The invite only event was sponsored by Ciroc. DJ Mister Cee, DJ Enuff and DJ Camillo were on the 1’2 and 2’s. I had a great time with my college friend Skip who came to NYC from North Carolina. We danced, ate some good food and had a drink or two. Celebrity blogger Miss Info, Def Jam’s Sean Pecas, and radio personality K. Foxx were also in attendance. Peep the pics below:
