Don Bleek’s Recap: Odd Future And Raekwon Headlines Peter Rosenberg Birthday Bash At The Best Buy Theater

This past Thursday (July 26), I was on a NYC tour. Not only did I attend the ‘Coors Light and Ice Cube Search for the Coldest MC’ featuring DJ Drama and Fabolous at Irving Plaza, I also hit up New York’s Hot 97 morning show host, Peter Rosenberg’s star-studded birthday concert at the Best Buy Theater. I was on hand to capture the memorable moment. Some of Hip-Hop’s newcomers and legends got together for a sold out show.

‘Peter Rosenberg Presents: A Night of Real Hip-Hop’ featured performances by newcomers Nitty Scott, Smoke DZA and Asher Roth who was introduced by Action Bronson. Legendary rapper Raekwon of the Wu-Tang Clan, Odd Future and Earl Sweatshirt headlined this event which was produced by Adman Lublin and AEG Live for Peter Rosenberg and Hot 97.

As always, Raekwon shut down the building as he performed some of his classic records including “C.R.E.A.M.” and “Ice Cream” before making room for Odd Future, who closed out the show with a big bang.

Odd Future did not disappoint their screaming fans who waited in line for over an hour to see the Wolf Gang. They came to the stage deep, giving the people their money worth. OF performed tracks such as “Bitch Suck Dick”, “Rella”, “Yonkers” “Sam Is Dead”, and “Kill People, Burn Shit, Fuck School”. Odd Future also performed records off their The OF Tape Vol. 2Goblin and Bastard albums. Tyler, the Creator, Frank Ocean, Earl Sweatshirt and Hodgy Beats put on a great show. They closed out their set with “Radical”.

This event was a night to remember. I’m sure the fans had a good time, as they blew smoke in the air, threw water bottles across the theater and jumped up and down.

Odd Future’s Singer Comes Out Of The Closet & Confirms He’s Gay: Frank Ocean Says He Was In Love With A Man In A Heartfelt Letter He Wrote

This past Monday (July 2), I reported that Odd Future’s singer and songwriter Frank Ocean opened up about his bisexuality on his new album, entitled Channel Orange. Some people were confused and wondering if it was true or not. Well, indeed it is 100% true. In a recent heartfelt and powerful letter to his fans which Ocean posted on his Tumblr, he confirms that he is gay and was in love with a man when he was 19-year-old. In this letter, Ocean also recounted the time he spent with this man. Read Ocean’s letter in its entirety below:

Frank Ocean and Beyoncé in the studio

Frank Ocean and Jay-Z in the studio

Whoever you are. Wherever you are… I’m starting to think we’re a lot alike. Human beings spinning on blackness. All wanting to be seen, touched, heard, paid attention to. My loved ones are everything to me here. In the last year or 3 I’ve screamed at my creator, screamed at clouds in the sky, for some explanation. Mercy maybe. For peace of mind to rain like manna somehow. 4 summers ago, I met somebody. I was 19 years old. He was too. We spent that summer, and the summer after, together. Everyday almost. And on the days we were together, time would glide. Most of the day I’d see him, and his smile. I’d hear his conversation and his silence…until it was time to sleep. Sleep I would often share with him. By the time I realized I was in love, it was malignant. It was hopeless. There was no escaping, no negotiating to the women I had been with, the ones I cared for and thought I was in love with. I reminisced about the sentimental songs I enjoyed when I was a teenager. The ones I played when I experienced a girlfriend too quickly. Imagine being thrown from a plane. I wasn’t in a plane though. I was in a Nissan Maxima, the same car I packed up with bags and drove to Los Angeles in. I sat there and told my friend how I felt. I wept as the words left my mouth. I grieved for then. Knowing I could never take them back for myself. He patted my back. He said kind things. He did his best, but he wouldn’t admit the same. He had to go back inside soon. It was late and his girlfriend was waiting for him upstairs. He wouldn’t tell the truth about his feelings for me for another 3 years. I felt like I’d only imagined reciprocity for years. Now imagine being thrown from a cliff. No, I wasn’t on a cliff. I was still in my car telling myself it was gonna be find and to take deep breaths. I took the breaths and carried on. I kept up a peculiar friendship with him because I couldn’t imagine keeping up my life without him. I struggled to master myself and my emotions. I wasn’t always successful.

West Coast Rap Crew Vs. East Coast Rap Crew: A$AP Rocky Speaks On Beef With Hodgy Beats, Tyler The Creator & Odd Future

As I previous reported, Harlem’s rapper A$AP Rocky aka “that pretty muthaf**ka” is covering the February/March issue of Complex with fashion designer Jeremy Scott. I came across some excerpts from his cover story. In this particular section, the 24-year-old emcee talked about his issues with West Coast rap crew Odd Future. Rocky found time to clear the air, after Hodgy Beats of Odd Future threw shots at him. Below are some excerpts:

We talked about the Hodgy Beats thing and you got interviewed a shitload about it. Yeah.

Have you spoken to them yet? No.

And has there been any reaching out from his side? No.

Is the question getting annoying for you? It’s really irrelevant. Fuck annoying, it’s irrelevant. Put that in there. Quote: “Fuck annoying, it’s irrelevant.”

What do you see as the biggest difference between your two crews? East Coast, West Coast. Lifestyle. Culture. Not culture, but just day-to-day, everyday shit. It’s really fucked up because I know that they don’t like us. A lot of my crew members don’t like them niggas, but I like them niggas. I’m being honest. I like them.

Why don’t you think they like you? Nah. I know they don’t like us.

How do you know that? Because Hodgy went out his way to show that he doesn’t like us. He doesn’t have to like us. That’s fine with me.

Do you think they feel threatened by you guys? I don’t know what it is. They shouldn’t because we’re not coming for their necks or nothing like that. Personally, like I said, I want to work with Tyler, The Creator.

How big do you think that could be? I mean, I don’t really want to speak on it because it’s going to be corny. Like, if we work together, we work together. If we don’t, we don’t.

Are you siding with the West (Tyler, the Creator & Odd Future) or the East (A$AP Rocky & A$AP Mob)?

Emerging Star: Frank Ocean Talks His Def Jam Debut Dropping This Spring, Working With Jay-Z, Beyonce, Kanye West & Odd Future

Music artist Frank Ocean, who was also one of the music industry’s breakthrough artists of 2011, claims the runner-up spot on the BBC Sound of 2012 list of emerging stars, which includes Azealia Banks and A$AP Rocky. During an interview in Los Angeles where he resides, the 24-year-old singer-songwriter spoke about Odd Future’s impact, working with Beyoncé, Jay-Z, and Kanye West, his upcoming Def Jam debut, which is dropping this spring and his goals. Below are some excerpts:

On Odd Future’s influence: “They’ve liberated my thinking in some ways—creatively in a sense of knowing that you can do a lot of it by yourself, not just the songs, but taking control of your whole movement.”

On his debut Nostalgia, Ultra: “Making that was a labor of love. It was difficult to piece together all the resources at the quality of record I wanted to make. It’s a process I appreciate so much in retrospect.”

On working with Beyoncé, Jay-Z, and Kanye West: “It’s pretty rad to hear Beyoncé sing a song of yours or to hear Jigga, ‘Ye rhyme over and be on a song that you’re on. These are some of the heroes of my generation, so even being called out to be on those projects… It wasn’t like I was shopping a song for these projects. They called me to come to the studio and that’s pretty rad.”

On his new album, due this spring: “It succinctly defines me as an artist for where I am right now and that was the aim, just to make something that represents where you are at that time. It’s about the stories. If I write 14 stories that I love, then the next step is to get the environment of music around it to best envelop the story and all kinds of sonic goodness—sonic goodies.”

On his goals: “I’ve been feeling really mortal lately. If I could do anything from today on, it would be doing whatever it is that I do at a level of excellence. That’s all I’m really trying to do while I’m here.”

Odd Future Wolf Gang: Tyler, The Creator Talks Passion For Films, Visuals, Books & Starting A Punk Band

Taking pictures and shooting visuals are two hobbies of Tyler, the Creator. 2011 was a great year for the Odd Future leader. He won “Best New Artist” at the 2011 MTV Awards. Over the past year, I grew to like this Cali native. The Fader caught with Tyler, the Creator. In the interview, he talked  about his passion for films, visuals, books and starting a punk band. Below are some excerpts:

On why he like to film. I don’t even know. I just like taking pictures. It’s not a film or digital thing, I just like taking pictures as a whole. I just happen to use cameras I have to load film with. It’s not an either/or. I just happen to use those.

On if he like working with visuals more than music. I can’t choose anymore. When people ask whether I like making the video to a song or making a song to the video that’s in my head, I don’t know, I can’t choose between either one because they go hand-in-hand. They need each other.

On starting a punk band. I’m in a punk band. It’s called Odd Future. But I really wanna be in a [rock] band. Rock bands are way cooler than rappers, in general. When people make end of the year lists, I wanna be near Trash Talk and The Strokes or some shit instead of fucking rappers that’s up-and-coming. I hate that shit. That shit sucks.

On what kind of other books are you into? I have a collection of shit at my house. VICE . I have a lot of those. SkateboardThrasher. I have a lot of Thrashers. Other random magazines from Europe because I like the covers. I was into Goosebumps really heavy when I was younger.
