DON BLEEK EXCLUSIVE: Queens Rap Group Mobb Deep Is In The Process Of Signing A BIGGGG Deal

One of New York’s infamous rap groups is in the process of signing a big record deal. Queens duo Mobb Deep (Prodigy and Havoc) are in the process of signing with a major for their label Infamous Records. Because the lawyers are still working out the actual deal, I am not able to give the name of the major. I will say, that it is a label that Mobb Deep has worked with in the past. Let’s take a trip down memory lane. In the past, Mobb Deep was signed to Loud, Sony, Columbia, Jive and Interscope Records. I didn’t grow-up listening to Mobb Deep because I am young; however when I got older I started listening to their music. I like Mobb Deep because they rap about the harsh street life.

At the age of 18,  Mobb Deep released their debut album Juvenile Hell, which was led by the single “Peer Pressure.” The album didn’t reached mainstream success but that didn’t stop them from making dope music. In 1995, Mobb Deep released The Infamous, which was their first successful album. It debuted at number 15 on the Billboard 200, and number three on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart.

Mobb Deep last album Blood Money was released back in 2006. The album debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200 with 106,000 copies sold. Prodigy and Mobb Deep is in the studio working on their new album. The disc will feature production from Havoc, Alchemist, Sid Roams, DJ Premier, MTK, Cardiak and J.U.S.T.I.C.E League. Also, there is a rumored collaboration album between Nas & Mobb Deep.

Prodigy Told 50, “We Gotta Start Doing Songs With People,” Plus He Reached Out To Rick Ross

In an interview with Thisis50.com, Mobb Deep rapper Prodigy spoke about putting all his old beef  behind, when he came home, he went straight to the G-Unit office and told 50 that he and his partner Havoc has to work with other artists and spoke on his new book. Also, Prodigy reached out to Rick Ross, who he is rumored to be working on a project titled “Black Cocaine.” Peep the interview below:

Prodigy speaks on telling 50 that Mobb Deep has to do songs with other people:

I went straight from prison straight to the G-Unit office and then I came to the studio after that,” Prodigy explained. “So when I stopped at the office I had told 50, ‘Yo, right now we in a position where we gotta start doing songs with people.’ As far as Mobb Deep. We gotta start doing songs with a lot of people…Cause that’s what it is man. It’s like when nigga’s ain’t doing songs with people, beefing with people and all that. We really trying to dead all that.”

Prodigy speaks on Rick Ross’ corrections officer background, says he isn’t at all bothered by the rappers past and reached out to him.

Rick Ross is just one rapper out of many that we’ve been reaching out to,” said Prodigy. “Number one, aight he a correction officer. Aight, so what? I know a lot of cops. I know a lot of corrections officers. I know some people that’s on the other side of the criminal shit and just because you got that job or whatever that doesn’t necessarily mean that you a part of the people that’s tryna target us and fuck with us…That doesn’t bother me that he was a corrections officer.”

Breaking News: Rapper Prodigy Is On His Way Home From Jail

According to Prodigy’s longtime producer Alchemist, P is expected to be released from Rikers Island this February or maybe sooner. Alchemist spoke to Sway from MTV News during the Home and Home concerts and said this about Prodigy’s release from prison:

P comes home in February. It’s gonna be a very busy time. It’s amazing. He feels like he’s home already. He’s in the best health he’s been in. He’s really excited. I’ve been sending him beats. Havoc is sending him beats. I e-mail them to his wife, and she puts it on some type of cassette. It’s like he’s in the studio, he’s just not recording.”-Alchemist

Below is a story I wrote on Prodigy for XXL magazine back in March.

RAP SHEET
Name: Albert “Prodigy” Johnson
Age: 35
Crime: Criminal possession of a weapon. The charge stems from a 2006 incident where police discovered a .22 caliber pistol in P’s car after pulling him over for making an illegal U-turn. He was sentenced to three and a half years.
Began Sentence: February 2008
Expected Sentence: August 2011

THIS IS WHY HE’S HOT…

Cred: As the lyrical half of Mobb Deep, Prodigy has made a career of droppin’ morbid rhymes on hits like, “Shook Ones, Pt. II” and “Survival of the Fittest.” After crafting numerous classic cuts alongside producer/rapper Havoc, Prodigy dropped a solo gem on ’em in 2000 with H.N.I.C. Three more Mobb albums would follow, including 2006’s Blood Money on 50 Cent’s G-Unit Records.

Pre-Jail Buzz: Eventually splitting amicably from G-Unit, P continued to feed the streets with dark material. 2007 saw the release of his collaborative project with the Alchemist, Return of the Mac, which drew critical acclaim. The same goes for his subsequent release, H.N.I.C., Pt. 2, which dropped shortly after P started his sentence.

Release Therapy: With a career that spans over 17 years, Mobb Deep remains one of hip-hop’s most consistent groups and there’s no doubt that the same won’t hold true upon P’s release. Despite his incarceration, Prodigy continually reaches out to the public via letters/blogs that always stirs the pot. When it’s all said and done, though, fans are still thirstin’ for an MC to keep it thoro and can spit that dunn language.
