Fabolous And J. Cole Takes Over NYC, With Special Guests Lil Play Boii, Lloyd Banks & Red Cafe

This past Thursday, New York’s rapper Fabolous and Roc Nation recording artist J.Cole performed at the Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC for the CUNY Hunter concert. The show was sold out; jammed pack wall-to-wall. As the cheerful college students waited in line to enter the ballroom, they started screaming “We want Fabolous and J. Cole.”

Atlanta’s up and coming rapper Lil Playboii opened up the show. He performed his new single “Kitty Good (P***y)” and a few tracks off his latest mixtape Magic City, hosted by DJ Scream. Back Stage, I caught up with Lil Playboii for an exclusive interview (which I will post next week). Fabolous wasn’t doing any press, but his manager and I exchanged contact information and I will be interviewing him when he’s back in NYC.

After Lil Playboii exited the stage, Jay-Z’s protegé J. Cole entered the stage. He put on a great show. His stage presence was great and the crowd rocked with him. J. Cole performed “Higher,” It Won’t Be Long, and “Enchanted.” During the middle of his set, J. Cole took a few minutes to pay respect to his drummer and DJ. He allowed them to showcase their talents. After that, Cole recited his verses to “All I Want Is You,” “It Won’t Be Long,” “A Star Is Born” and “Looking For Trouble.” Cole closed out his set by performing “Who Dat.” Also Cole walked in the crowd to sign autographs and gave his fans handshakes & hugs; as his new single “Disgusting” played in the background.

A little after 11pm, Fabolous took the stage. The Bed-Stuy native opened up his set with “Imma Do Me” and “Body Ya.” Brooklyn was definitely in the building reppin for Loso’s. When he said, “Where Brooklyn at?” Almost everybody in the audience screamed to the top of their lungs. After that, Fab took it back to the beginning of his career, by performing “Breathe,”  “Can’t Deny It,” “Holla Back Youngin,” and “Let You Go.” Loso even kept it Brooklyn by bringing out his Partner-N-Rhyme Red Cafe. The duo performed “I’m Ill.” The biggest surprised of the night was when Loso brought out Queens rapper Lloyd Banks, who performed “Start It Up.” The fans were hyped to see The Boy Wonder. Toward the end, Fab tuned it down a little and performed the standout track from The S.O.U.L. Tape, “Really Tho” and other tracks off the mixtape. Loso closed out his set by performing “You Be Killin Em.”

Diddy & Fam Covers Vibe Aug/Sept Issue

Diddy, Rick Ross, Red Cafe, Dirty Money and Cassie is on the August/September issue of Vibe magazine.

In the cover story titled “Table For One,” Diddy shares his thoughts on regrettable interviews, Lil Kim Vs Nicki Minaj, regaining respect and more.

Dr. Dre said that the last beat that floored him was “All About the Benjamins.” How does that make you feel?
It’s humbling. I was in the studio with Dre the other day. He started working on a record for me. Watching him as a producer is watching greatness. We had a lot of similar traits. It was like looking in the mirror. He would ask questions like, “How you feel about this?” People don’t really understand true producers want to know how you feel about things. We are some of the most observant people on the planet.

What happened during the Martin Bashir interview on Nightline?
There were times in the interview when I had to give him an ultimatum. The questions weren’t being handled the right way. In hindsight, when I saw him I shouldn’t had done the interview because I know the style of interview that he does . . . The whole thing about giving a Maybach to my son, that’s really like a racist question. You don’t ask White people what they buy their kids. And they buy ‘em Porsches and convertible Bentleys and it ain’t no question. It’s really a racist question and put things back in perspective with money and the way that people still look at you. And I’m not saying that consciously he’s a racist. But he probably don’t even realize that he would not ask Steve Jobs that. He would be like Steve Jobs has that money and that’s the gift his kid is supposed to get.

Are the comments from Lil’ Kim about Nicki disheartening?
When I heard her say what she said, it didn’t really affect me. I didn’t get mad at her or anything like that. I knew how she felt. I ain’t agree with it. But also I know the motivation. I know that people say, “Oh, he’s trying to get a new Lil’ Kim.”  I guess people will see in time. Yeah, Nicki’s had flavored wigs on, but besides that it ain’t even the same approach to the writing.
